Patel wrapped his arms around Stoyan from behind as she watched Nadia run around in her mother’s backyard.

“Mmm.” She tilted her head to the side so he could press a kiss to her neck.

“Come take a walk with me,” he whispered. This was his last day in Woodbrook, and tomorrow he was leaving Trinidad to head back to Atlanta.

To Dutch.

Stoyan was staying behind for a little while longer, and though she’d been right next to him when Dutch had called, they hadn’t really gotten a chance to talk. No way was he leaving the island before they did just that.

Stoyan told her sister to keep an eye on Nadia, and they walked out the house, arm in arm. He didn’t have a particular destination in mind, so a while they strode in comfortable silence until Stoyan spoke first.

“How you feeling?”

He glanced at her. “What do you mean?”

“Tomorrow.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “Dutch. Bow chicka wow wow. You ready for that wood?”

“Uhm…” He sputtered. “Can we not talk about Dutch’s wood?”

“I doh care who bulling who, yuh know.” She dismissed him with a wave of her hand. “I just glad allyuh finally doing allyuh ting.”

He laughed and hugged her to his side as they walked down popular Ariapita Avenue, nicknamed simply de Avenue by the locals. “I love how your accent gets all thick and filthy when we’re here.” He pointed to a street vendor selling doubles—fast food made from curried chickpeas and bara or fried dough, usually served with chutney on top. “You want some?” When she nodded, he led her across the street to buy the food then they continued on. “Are you sure you’re okay about this me and Dutch thing?”

She stopped and gazed up at him with serious eyes. “I knew from day one where you and I would end up.” She glanced away, chewing slowly. “I’m very okay with it.”

He held back a smile. “Because of the boy toy?” He lifted an eyebrow when she refused to meet his gaze.

“Maybe.”

“Uh-huh.” He linked their arms and they continued walking. “He the reason you’re here instead of there?”

“I told you—”

“Dutch threatened you, yes.” Patel nodded. “But you’re not scared of Dutch, ’cause we both know he’s all talk when it comes to you. What did boy toy do?”

Stoyan sighed. “He always talking, talking. I dunno, man.”

“Used to be a time when the talent got paid to do things other than talking, right?”

She snickered. “He does that, too.” Her right eye closed in a wink.

“A multitasker then.”

“Uh huh.”

“Who you happen to have feelings for.”

“Ah chut.” Her way of telling him to shut up, but she didn’t confirm or deny. “I told Mummy me and you done.”

“You know your family will think I leff you to go take man.” Now his accent was coming out to play.

She shrugged. “Can’t be helped.”

It was the truth. “As long as you’re okay with it,” he told her. “I’m okay with it.”

“I don’t want to erase you from Nadia’s life,” Stoyan said sadly.
